These are all really great questions when determining how you can improve the successfulness of your website. So how do you even find out this information? There are many ways to track your website’s analytics, however one of the most common ways is through Google Analytics. It’s free, it’s powerful, and you don’t have to be a web expert to use it. Once you have your website set up, you’ll be able to keep track of all sorts of information that will help you get a better picture of what your customers want out of their web experience.

Some of the important things you can track are:

Number of Visitors:
Did that ad campaign bring more people to your site? Are people even visiting your site in the first place? It can be hard to tell sometimes. With analytics, you can keep track of how many unique visitors your site gets over a period of time. It also has information on how many of those visitors are new, and how many are returning.

Bounce Rate:
People love to see how many guests are visiting their site. It’s definitely an important piece of information, but you have to remember: Big numbers don’t always equal success. Your bounce rate tells you how many people are leaving the site without visiting your other pages. If you have a lot of visitors, but most of them are leaving before checking out what you have to offer, then you’ll need to figure out how to change that.

Visit Duration:
It’s also important to know how long people are staying on your website before leaving. If your average visit duration is a couple seconds then it’s clear that your visitors are not very interested in the content you have to offer.

Search Words:
How are people finding your website? Google Analytics can tell you which search words your visitors used to find your site, and which pages they’re landing on. From there you can figure out what kind of keywords and content you should focus on.

Devices:
Now that we can access the web from our phones and tablets, it’s important to be conscious of how our websites work on these devices. If you see that your site is getting a lot of people visiting on phones or tablets then you’ll want to make sure your website is responsive.
